Press Release 2017 Roger Williams Gold Piano Perform-a-thon

Students of 7Keys Music Participate in Piano Perform-a-thon

Famed Roger Williams Gold Piano Arrives in Charlotte—

Public and Student Access Offered

Charlotte, NC (September 14, 2017) – From Thursday October 12 through Sunday, October 15, the stunning Steinway & Sons Model B Roger Williams Gold Piano will be featured in a “perform-a-thon” at Queens University to benefit MusicalMinds NC. The seven-foot gold concert grand piano was created to celebrate the 80th birthday of Steinway Artist and pop piano titan Roger Williams. With its gleaming gold finish and striking music desk featuring the signature notes of Williams’ iconic composition “Autumn Leaves” the piano was unveiled in 2004 during a joint celebration of the birthdays of both Williams and President Jimmy Carter.

MusicalMinds is a Charlotte-area educational platform for social change. It offers a free holistic, after-school musical program for children with the fewest resources and greatest need, and is delivered at no cost to participants. To raise money for the organization, Steinway Piano Gallery Charlotte will host student recitals every hour on the hour throughout the weekend; each student who performs on the Roger Williams Gold Steinway piano will have participated in pledge-driven fundraising to generate support for MusicalMinds. The recitals will be held at Queens University of Charlotte in the E.H. Little Art Center’s Dana Auditorium.

Local music studios and schools are encouraged to participate in the perform-a-thon to provide their students with the opportunity to perform on a historic, one-of-a-kind Steinway grand piano while at the same time generating resources for underserved youth to receive classical music training.

The perform-a-thon will take place as follows:

  • Thursday, October 12, public piano viewing 12 noon to 6 pm.

  • Friday, October 13, student recitals every hour from 4 pm to 7 pm.

  • Saturday, October 14, student recitals every hour from 10 am to 4 pm.

  • Sunday, October 15, student recitals every hour from 12 pm to 4 pm.

“We are thrilled to help support MusicalMinds NC by making this incredible piano available for public viewing and student recitals,” said Mark Love, President of Steinway Piano Gallery Charlotte. “We encourage piano teachers to be very inclusive and to help as many students as possible become part of the pledge drive so they can have a chance to play the piano. The event is a win-win…local students have an opportunity to play a famous and historic piano while at the same time generating support for their young peers in classical music.”
